I WANNA TALK ABOUT HOW MUCH MAKI IS WILLING TO SHANK SOMEONE FOR A
First like I mentioned is the non-literal shanking, where she is absolutely not going to tolerate people criticizing him to her. SIMILAR TO HER THREAD WITH BOSS. She won't like... necessarily argue with people's criticisms if she thinks they are right (she will if she thinks they are being unfair, though probably not revealing as much that was said to her in confidence as she did with Boss) but she will ABSOLUTELY be like "if you have a problem with him you have a problem with me." They've decided they are similar and they understand each other so she's not really willing to tolerate people acting like SHE is a perfectly nice person and A is an asshole, since she sees basically no reason why that would be the case. If anything she's pretty sure she's more of an asshole habitually, even if she has not exploded quite as badly maybe.
Then there is the literal shanking. She's... She's extremely emotionally invested in him now. She was willing enough to be spiteful at C when she barely knew him and just vaguely empathized... if anyone actually deeply hurt A now they would be in some Real Danger. Though Boss is a special case here obviously.
I'm so happy. What a wholesome pair. He is the same, though it's not
something he has actively thought about. I very much hope that they will
have the chance to shank for one another during the Betrayal game.
I've been trying to think of something I haven't rambled about in that
plurk yesterday... I AM STILL THINKING can you think of anything specific
Hmm. I'm not sure how much there is to say, but two related questions:
1) What are A's actual feelings on Maki being an assassin? HOW MUCH IS HE JUST NOT THINKING ABOUT IT TOO HARD?
Related because I saw C commented on him being buddy-buddy with Maki despite her being an assassin - 2) His thoughts on how OTHER PEOPLE see his relationship with Maki?
For the most part, he's willfully not focusing on it, though he has decided
that it is OBVIOUSLY not her fault for REASONS. Some of which are rational!
Maki does not super seem like she has been allowed to make a whole lot of
her own life choices! but also he is pretty good at believing exactly what
he wants to believe, and what he wants to believe is that Maki has never
done anything wrong in her entire life.
He had basically that point with Boss before everything blew up and frankly
was even willing to get along with Oni until it became Personal, because it
was far more convenient to do so.
Which leads to the second point, which is that he has never felt like he
was losing any social currency by hanging out with her. The only person
who's called him out on it is C, and who even cares what he thinks? And at
this point he's invested enough in her he will just attempt to spin the
narrative to how he sees it.
THAT IS A GOOD QUESTION. It's hard to say for sure without knowing how her relationships with the team would have developed differently. Boss and Oni have developed as some of the top people she is comfortable with anyway, but I am not sure how that would be different actually on the same team.
IN GENERAL THOUGH it's likely she would have started out more relaxed/open... she likes Taisho but they... I don't want to say put her on the defensive exactly, but made her much more immediately aware of how she presents herself and how she interacts with people, whereas BE=DE's more like... chill dumb boy attitude would have been a lot more comfortable for her to interact with without worrying too much about it. Like Kaito in canon. On the other hand that same situation might have made her a lot more Team Mom in a way she's not right now because she mostly trusts Taisho to be on top of their own shit or else doesn't really care. And Team Mom is not actually a thing I particularly enjoy playing so that's a good thing.
It's possible she'd also be more comfortable being violent / with the fact that she's assassin if she was on a team where that was the motif? Or even if not, I feel like people's expectations of her on that count would be pretty different, whereas now people seem to assume she's a calm and nice person based on (as far as she can tell) very little evidence, which definitely affects how self-conscious she feels about it.
Have the teams developed differently than you expected?
Maki started out incredibly unimpressed with Intensity and while she has not actually become any more impressed she has become... more endeared...
She does not actually mind him being an asshole, see also: A, see also: herself, but she was very bemused at how he was doing it specifically. Is recreationally taking random potshots at strangers really fulfilling for you... seems like a lot of effort for people you don't care about. Then when somehow he managed to talk himself into getting to know her SO HE CAN INSULT HER BETTER she was surprised and he was suddenly a little cute, although she still did not at all understand his deal. She was then further surprised when he played along with the whole kidnapped-B-in-a-tower scene... she read him as someone who took himself way too seriously for that, so that was also a bit endearing. The love letter battle was also interesting - it was ALSO confusing for her in the... why would he even suggest that... way, but then the fact that she won made her wonder if maybe the deal here is that she has somehow found someone EVEN WORSE AT FEELINGS THAN SHE IS.
Talking to B about him a bit lends weight to this theory... B also has told her a couple times about how funny he thinks Intensity is, which is not a way Maki would have thought about him on her own, but she can also kind of see what he's getting at. On the other hand she talked to Boss about him a bit too and Boss mentioned that he pushes his buttons, and Maki was just like... how? I have never seen him even in the vicinity of one of my buttons? Just kind of puzzled there.
Side note: she is also still not sure if he was trying to provoke her, he just made some bad choices of words or what questions to answer, or if he genuinely has dominatrix fantasies about her. Unsure how she feels about that.
In summary I would hesitate to say she likes him because she is still unsure WTF is going on with him, but overall?? more positively inclined than expected??
The thing about Intensity and first meetings is there is no ramp up with him. He just shows up at 100% and those that manage to catch his interest, he will continue to bother again. So when Intensity first met Maki and was being... well himself... with the insults, he was really confused because she wasn't a) rising to the bait and getting angry, b) getting upset and passive aggressive, or c) being too much a space cadet to know what Intensity was trying to do. Which was basically get a strong reaction out of her. She was very calm and rational but not in a "I'm forcing myself to be polite" kind of way. She was just being what Intensity perceived as her natural self.
What is up with that?
That's very unusual and very interesting.
Thus, he talked himself into trying to understand what makes Maki tick. And since he is an asshole that stereotypes people and puts them into well defined boxes, the only persona (so to speak) that he identified with her is Ice Princess. So in his mind, she had inherited all those traits. When the damsel!B event came around, Intensity immediately challenged her to something that would be appropriate to her unit (since C did all the work to make sure Lives could happen) and that an ice princess would be bad at. So love letters! But then he saw how genuine hers was and was like FUCK I CAN'T BEAT THAT so --- yeah. He still tried! But he knew he was going to lose from the start. And it further confused him to not being able to pin down who Maki at all. But still intrigued, so---
Re: dominatrix, Intensity will literally say anything to get a reaction out of Maki (or Hiryuu too actually). So no, it's not that he has fantasies about her (even though she is hot and Intensity appreciates that). She is just a very interesting puzzle that he has no clue how to even start solving.
But it's fun, so he's going to keep trying.
(I'm really excited for Betrayal where Intensity has a chance to learn more about how completely off base his impression of Maki is)
Outside of A and Boss, who are the three people that Maki is the closest to.
Yasuragi, B, and... I am not sure who gets the slot after that. Oni? Shuten? C??? (She still doesn't especially LIKE C but they do at least have... a relationship...)

let's talk about it anyway
