It's the end of a trial. Kaito looks like he's coughed up a lot of blood. Monokuma apparently has control over his armed mechs again, and warns the students against defying him - but Maki is still ready to fight them with a knife. Kaito tries to talk her down, but she refuses to back off.
Maki: I've always fought to kill, but... this is the first time I've fought to protect someone! Kaito: Huh? Maki: And... I've never... been given a name like "Maki Roll" before, either. Kaito: You... Maki: And I've never... met someone as stubborn as you before... And... I've never... fallen for someone before...
Maki starts crying.
Maki: I... don't want this to end... I just... don't... That's why I won't let you kill Kaito! I absolutely won't let you!
Kaito essentially says that he appreciates it, but that his sickness means he's going to die soon anyway - he's struggling to say standing. Also, Maki used to keep herself apart from people because she didn't think she deserved to have friends, but if she's fallen for a guy like him, that means she can learn to love herself. Maki finally lowers her knife and just breaks down into messy crying.
Kaito apologizes to Monokuma for the delay and says he can start the execution. As the Ultimate Astronaut, he's fired into space in a rocket - however, he dies quietly of his illness in space before it comes crashing back down to earth.
