Maki is alone in a room full of many, many weapons:
She is there for hours, not really doing anything, just keeping an eye on the single door. There is the sense that rather than looking to get out, she's watching for anyone coming in.
Transcript (Parentheticals are thoughts and not included in broadcast, but included for context):
Maki: ... Kaede: Maki... you were in the Game Room when Rantaro was killed, right? Shuichi: What were you all doing down here? Rantaro was with you, right? Maki: ...Am I a suspect? Kaede: Oh, no! That's not what I meant-- Maki: You should suspect me. In fact, you should be suspicious of everyone. Kaede: Huh? Maki: Someone got killed right after we all gathered here. The timing is too perfect. Then again, with the time limit so close to expiring, maybe that's why it happened... So trust no one, Kaede... Or you'll lose, got it? Kaede: (I can't get a read on Maki at all. She just saw a dead body, yet she's perfectly calm. It's hard to imagine her as the Ultimate Child Caregiver.) Shuichi: But... why were you all here in the first place? Maki: It was Kaito's idea. He suddenly wanted to hold a strategy meeting and gathered us together. He said we should confront Monokuma once the time limit expires. And he picked the seven people he thought would be useful in a fight. Kaede: (Seven people... Kaito, Gonta, Maki, Tenko, Himiko, Angie, and Rantaro...) Kaede: But, um... I'm not sure those seven would all be useful in a fight, though. Maki: Kaito thought Himiko's magic and Angie's connection to Atua would be useful. Kaede: But what about you, Maki? Why did he also pick the Ultimate Child Caregiver? Maki: ...He just looked at me and said, "Yeah, you probably know how to fight." Kaede: (That's it? Geez... That does sound like something Kaito would do, though...) Shuichi: But why have a strategy meeting in the Game Room in the basement? Maki: ...Beats me. Maybe Kaito figured it would be harder for Monokuma to find us here. Kaede: (In other words, it was just a coincidence?) Shuichi: And what was Rantaro doing at the time? Was he in the strategy meeting with you? Maki: He was... at first. But he excused himself to go to the bathroom, and left on his own... Kaito and Tenko went looking for him so we could finish the meeting before time expired. Kaede: (That must have happened around...) [flashback to meeting Kaito and Tenko in the hallway] Kaede: Then, did the four of you just wait in the Game Room the whole time? Maki: Angie, Himiko and I were the only ones who stayed behind. Gonta never joined us. Kaede: ...Huh? Gonta wasn't with you guys? Maki: Gonta did arrive, but then he left and locked himself in the A/V room in the back. Kaede: He was in the A/V Room by himself? Maki: Suspicious behavior, isn't it? The other two felt the same way. Kaede: What other two? Maki: Why don't you go to the A/V Room? They're probably still there...
Maki rings the doorbell of Shuichi's dorm room repeatedly. (She's ringing it like Kaito would.) Shuichi answers.
Maki: ... Shuichi: Huh? Maki!? Maki: Kaito's resting. He says he's not feeling well... and that we should train without him. Shuichi: ...Just the two of us? Maki: It's pretty thoughtless of him to bug me to train with you guys, then flake out... Shuichi: Ah, well, he *did* say he wasn't feeling well— Maki: Why are you making excuses for him? Shuichi: Ah, no, I... I guess you're right. Maki: Let's just get this over with. I didn't come here to make small talk with you.
They head outside to the courtyard to do some pushups.
Shuichi: ... Maki: ... Shuichi: ... Maki: Hey... Shuichi: What is it? Maki: Why are you training...? I don't think a detective needs to do this. Shuichi: ...Probably not, but... Overthinking things and worrying about what I "need" to do... When I'm with Kaito, I feel like... all of that stuff just fades away. Maki: Do you... look up to that idiot? Shuichi: Ah, I don't know if I'd call it "looking up" to him... It's just that I've never been around someone so relaxed... and impulsive. I think that's exactly what I've been missing all this time... Maki: *sigh* I never realized until now how gross it is to hear men talk about being manly. Shuichi: ...
Maki stands up and brushes off her hands nonchalantly.
Maki: 100... I'm done. Shuichi: You're really fast... as usual. Maki: I used to be forced to do push-ups until I passed out. 100 push-ups is nothing. Shuichi: What? Maki: About Kaito... I sort of understand what you mean. But I'm a bit jealous of how carefree he is... even if he is useless. I was taught to only value the essentials... I was forced to abandon anything nonessential so they could mold me as they saw fit... After everything they did to me... I sometimes wonder what I am anymore. I didn't ask to become this way. It just... happened to me... After what I've been through... am I still even human? Even Keebo acts more human than me. Shuichi: ... Maki: But... I had no choice but to— Maki: ... Maki: ...Why am I talking to you about this? You can't help me. Shuichi: Ah, but... I'm kind of the same way. I never once *wanted* to be a detective. I actually thought it wasn't too great a job. Uncovering people's secrets for money? ...It's the worst. But now, I feel completely different. If it's going to help my friends, I'll do it. And it's Kaede and Kaito that have helped me see things that way. Maki: ... I... didn't ask to hear your story.
Maki's face remains totally unfazed as she turns and walks away.
Shuichi: Ah, see you tomorrow, Maki!
Maki doesn't reply and keeps walking back to the dorms.
Incidentally, if anyone is paying attention to the background of the memory, while it appears to be mostly normal dorms and school grounds, everything is a little overgrown, and the whole place appears to be... surrounded in a huge dome with a giant wall.
Maki opens the door of her research lab from the inside before Shuichi can from the outside.
Maki: ...I did not give you permission to enter. Shuichi: Ah! Maki? So this is the Ultimate Child Caregiver's lab. ...You wouldn't think so, judging by the door— Maki: You're right. Goodbye. Shuichi: W-Wait! Can I look inside for a bit? Maki: No. Shuichi: What? But... there's no rule against people going into each other's labs... Maki: I don't care about the rules. I'm not letting anyone inside.
As Shuichi wonders what's going on, Kokichi approaches.
Kokichi: Heeeeyyy! What's going on? You guys aren't in the middle of a tiff now, are you? Maki: ...See? Thanks to you, an annoying brat has showed up. Kokichi: You hear that, Shuichi? An annoying brat has showed up, all because of you! Shuichi: Y-Yeah... Kokichi: So, what's up? You don't want anyone to enter your lab, Maki? Don't be so pushy, Shuichi. It's not good to do stuff that'll make a girl upset, y'know? Shuichi: Ah, okay... I understand. Maki: Good, then stay away. If you try to go inside, it would be extremely painful... for you. Shuichi: Painful!?
BIG TAKEAWAYS: - I got a memory back in this memory?? Flashback light?? - Apparently we were all being hunted for our Ultimate talents? - Cool cool definitely trapped in a school where we have to play a killing game to escape - SO... THAT'S KAITO, HUH... kind of judging her taste in guys a bit - C still seems in character, though.
ABRIDGED TRANSCRIPT:
Fourteen students are gathered in an overgrown gym. Angie gathers them around to show some kind of weird flashlight, but says she couldn't figure out what it was, so she had to ask for help.
A black and white stuffed bear appears from the ceiling.
Monokuma: If somethin' has you worried, just let Monokuma take care of it! If you don't know something, I'll tell you. If you need help, I'll help you. If you don't like something, I'll fix it. So don't get rid of it... Please don't get rid... of me.
No one appears very impressed by this and Angie just asks him what the flashlight is.
Monokuma: Why, that's a Flashback Light. That flashlight doesn't shed light on darkness, it sheds light on your lost memories. You guys seemed concerned that you couldn't remember how you came to this school... But if you use that Flashback Light, you'll remember everything! Shuichi: What...? With this light? Kaito: So it's your fault we don't remember when we were kidnapped, huh? Kirumi: What did you do to us, and how did you steal our memories away? Monokuma: Hmm, maybe if you use the Flashback Light, you'll be able to remember that too. Maki: ...I don't believe it. No way this flashlight will recover our memories. Monokuma: I bet there were a lot of naysayers and skeptics when the telephone was invented, too. For your information, the Flashback Light can treat various symptoms of memory loss. The light it emits stimulates the basal ganglia and hippocampus. Not just that, but physical—Phew, I didn't realize how boring it would be to explain. Basically, it works like that...
Monokuma leaves again.
Kaito: Hey! Don't give up on explaining after a single sentence!
They talk about whether they should use it. The sentiment is generally negative. Ryoma points out that they have the Ultimate Inventor with them, but her input is—
Miu: You're all a bunch of Ultimate Dumbasses! No fuckin' way that thing can treat amnesia! Then again... these aren't exactly normal circumstances... Korekiyo: So in such an uncanny environment as this, common sense has no place... Tsumugi: Well, there are those neuralyzer things. The flashy things from Men in Black... Maki: Why are you talking about a movie? This is real life. Tsumugi: Y-You're right... Sorry. Kokichi: I... don't think we should do it... I'm scared it might cause some weird side effects... Himiko: Nyeeeh... I'm worried about how it will affect my magic. Kirumi: ...Has everyone spoken? If we're in accord, I will consent as well. What about you, Shuichi? You have not said anything yet. Shuichi: What? Ah, I— Kaito: Alright! Then it's decided! Let's use it!
Everyone is like "...what?"
Kaito: Geez, you guys are way too cautious. I mean, I understand why. We're in such a weird situation, after all. But... we can't win by just running away all the time! If you want to win, you've got to be a little reckless sometimes. If we can't face this danger, there's no way we'll be able to defeat Monokuma. Korekiyo: Kekeke... Well, aren't you confident? But you have no idea *how* we're supposed to win, do you? Kaito: Yeah, I've got no clue. But still... If you wanna win, you've got to make a stand somewhere or you'll never move forward. If we run away, our kids will grow up to be the kinda people who run away from things like this! Maki: ...Huh? What are you talking about? Kaito: If you still want to run away, then go ahead. I won't stop you or blame you. Kokichi: Okaaay, fine. Then, let's go— ...Huh? What's wrong, everyone? Aren't we going?
Everyone agrees that, having heard Kaito's speech, they want to stay.
Kokichi: I'll stay, too! So what if it might cause some weird side effects? That's no big deal!
They decide to do it. Angie flicks on the light. Everyone looks like they're hit with a lightning bolt.
Shuichi: Yes, I remember everything now! In order to escape the Ultimate Hunt, I erased my own memory— Kaito: Wait, did you say Ultimate Hunt?
It seems like they all remembered the same thing—being chased in the Ultimate Hunt. However... none of them can remember what the Ultimate Hunt actually is (other than, presumably, hunting down students with Ultimate talents for some reason).
Miu: Ugh, this feels gross. Like a shit that won't fully squeeze out. Ryoma: Even if we can't remember, we should still be able to figure something out... If we were all running from the Ultimate Hunt, then why are we imprisoned here? Could the reason be... that we were caught by the Ultimate Hunt? K1-B0: You mean, we tried to escape by erasing our memories, but they found us anyway... And subsequently, we were captured as part of this Ultimate Hunt? Kaito: Then, this killing game is... Ryoma: Yeah... it might be the work of the Ultimate Hunt.
Everyone reacts to this.
Kirumi: It seems losing him made a far bigger impact than we expected. Maki: Him?
She reminds everyone that Rantaro had seemed to know more about what was happening than the rest of them, and in fact had specifically asked if any of them knew about the Ultimate Hunt.
Kokichi: Hmmm... our mild-mannered mystery man said that, huh...? Shuichi: But then, why did only Rantaro remember the Ultimate Hunt? Korekiyo: There is no point in discussing that now. After all, he is already dead. But if you truly wish to hear his words, I could perform a seance for you. Hmhm~ ♪ Kaito: S-Stop it! Don't bring up weird stuff like that! And why're you acting girly all of a sudden?!
Monokuma appears again.
Monokuma: Yep, death can be real heartless. Himiko: Says the root of all evil... Monokuma: Puhuhuhu... Looks like you guys safely got your memory back. Miu: What the hell's goin' on, you stupid-ass bear?! This Ultimate Hunt makes no goddamn sense! Monokuma: Looks like your sealed memories are more stubborn than I thought... Just one use of the Flashback Light wasn't enough to restore all of your memories... Kokichi: You're such a terrible liar. You totally did that on purpose. Maki: What connection do you have with the Ultimate Hunt? Monokuma: Puhuhuhu... I can't reveal that. Regardless of my true identity, my goal is crystal clear. And that is, to make you guys participate in the killing game! That is my only desire!
Monokuma leaves again.
Tenko: Wh-What?! Killing game?! I will never do that ever again! Kaito: We just gotta work together. If we cooperate, we'll make it out of here alive. Just like a certain someone said... K1-B0: But I believe cooperating with each other is the most logical course of action— Kokichi: *snore* I'm snooooring! K1-B0: Why are you sleeping?! Kokichi: Whoa! Huh, what?! Tsumugi: Hey, Kokichi... we're having a serious conversation here. Kokichi: And is it written somewhere that I have to take serious conversations seriously? Kaito: Tch, quit acting so immature! Kokichi: Hm? I'm a teenager... so duh, I'm immature. Aren't you guys forgetting to act your age? K1-B0: But I don't have a biological age... Kokichi: Don't worry about it, Keebo. I'm just talking to the humans right now! K1-B0: ...Grgh! Kokichi: What were we talking about again? Something about working together to escape, right? Tenko: So you *were* listening, you horrible degenerate. Kokichi: We don't have to work together, though. Let's just ask how we can get out. Maki: If we ask Monokuma, he'll say the only way is to win the killing game. Kokichi: Oh, we're not gonna ask Monokuma. We're gonna ask the mastermind among us. Shuichi: What?! Miu: A-Are you already goin' senile?! I thought we agreed that there is no mastermind? Kokichi: Hm, oh yeah. We did, didn't we? If we tried to sniff out a mastermind again, we'd just repeat Kaede's screwup. Kaito: You'd better quit messing around! Kokichi: Eh? You think I'm messing around right now? Aw man, you really don't get it. I'm trying to get this through to everyone... If you keep saying all this uplifting stuff about working together and cooperating... then you can expect to receive some painful retaliation. Get it? Shuichi: What are you suggesting, Kokichi? Kaito: Argh, that's enough! I'm gonna slug him! Kokichi: Aaahh! He's gonna punch me! I gotta make a break for it!
Maki is hanging out with Shuichi in the courtyard.
Maki: ...You look like you want to ask something. Shuichi: I do? Maki: Well, whatever. I told you to pretend like you didn't hear anything... but I can't take back what I said. Shuichi: ... Maki: You're wondering who that girl is, right? She was a close friend from the orphanage. Shuichi: A close friend... Maki: Why do you look so relieved? Shuichi: Ah, I do? Maki: Yeah, you do. It's gross.
[...]
Shuichi: I'm just glad that... you have a friend like that in your life. Maki: Hmm... I see. So that's why you're making a gross face. Back at the orphanage, I was a normal kid.
[Maki seems a little annoyed.]
Shuichi: I-I'm sorry... Maki: It's fine. Shuichi: Then, what did you mean when you said she would take your place? Maki: ...The scouts had their eyes on her first, not me. Shuichi: What? Maki: I had enough talent, but she had even more talent. She was very kind. A crybaby who easily got lonely, but tried to be strong... If she had been taken to such a place, then she would've lived her life crying forever. That's why... I volunteered to go. At the time, I had no idea what was in store for me as an assassin... But I endured the training. If she had gone through this, she would've died. That's why... I was so desperate to do my best.
[Shuichi looks saddened.]
Maki: ...Being with her was really fun. We would wear matching outfits, bake sweets and exchange them... We would get in trouble with our teacher because we would talk late into the night. We played House often with the other kids at the orphanage. She would play as the mom, and I would play as the dad. Well, neither of us knew our parents so the only thing we could do was imagine it.
[Dialogue choice! We are going with...]
Shuichi: That's surprisingly cute. Maki: Wh-What are you saying...? Don't say things like cute. That kind of thing doesn't exist in my heart. Shuichi: No, I really think so. I'm sure you would make a good "dad." Maki: Sh-Shut up! Stop imagining whatever it is you're thinking!
Kaito drags Maki by the arm out into the courtyard, where Shuichi is waiting.
Kaito: Hey, sorry I was late. I had trouble bringing her. Shuichi: Her? Maki: ... Shuichi: Maki? Why is Maki here? Maki: ...That's what I'd like to know. Someone kept buzzing my intercom and I got so fed up, I finally opened the door. Then this guy grabbed my arm and dragged me all the way here— Kaito: Well, don't worry about the small stuff! If we're gonna train, it's more fun with three people than two, right? Maki: Training? The three of us? Is that really the reason you dragged me here? This is stupid... I'm going back.
She turns to go.
Kaito: Heh... you callin' this stupid? Listen up! When a hero has to fight with a big enemy, they train, train, then train some more! That's what this training is! It's important for a hero like me. So you guys can be like super dog, cat or horse by my side to help me be the hero! Shuichi: Of all the examples you could have picked... Maki: Did you really think that crazy explanation would convince me to stay? This is still stupid... I'm going back. Kaito: Hey, hold on a sec... When I said I was the hero, that's just from my perspective. Even super pets think of themselves as heroes. The same goes to both of you! Each of you are the heroes of your own stories! So act more like it!
Maki stares at him for a moment.
Maki: ...I don't know what you're up to... but I told you both to stay away from me. You know this will end badly if you don't, so why are you being so difficult? Kaito: How long are you going to run away? Maki: ...What?
Kaito brings his face close to Maki's.
Kaito: Your mask is coming down... I could tell just by looking at you today. You're not the terrifying person the others think you are... You're just a coward. Maki: ... Kaito: Hey, what's your enemy? Maki: ...Huh? My enemy? Kaito: You don't need to tell me what it is, as long as you know it yourself. So how long are you going to run away from your enemy? Maki: ...Run away? Kaito: Yeah, you've been running away. It's pretty pathetic. But... if you want to stand against it, even a little... I'll train with you! So you can be strong!
Maki stares/glares(?) at Kaito for a pretty long silence. Shuichi looks nervous.
Maki: ... Kaito: So what are you going to do?! Shuichi: Hey, Kaito... It's okay, you don't have to— Maki: ...Fine, I'll do it. Shuichi: Huh? You'll do it? Maki: Don't get the wrong idea. He'll just bug me about it later if I refuse. Kaito: Heh, so you do get it! Maki: ...The only way to deal with idiots like him is to give up and just keep nodding. Kaito: Y-You don't get it at all! Whatever... you just better get ready. I won't hold back just cuz you're a girl. Maki: ...Well, what are we doing first? Kaito: Alright! First, 100 push-ups!
They go to do push-ups together.
Shuichi: Hah...! Hah...! Hah...! Kaito: N-Not bad... Shuichi... You're getting... better! Shuichi: H-Hey Kaito... no slacking today, yeah? I'm counting your reps! Kaito: Heh, I'm on fire today. I can easily do 50 push-ups! Shuichi: I thought we were doing a hundred! Kaito: Hey, what about you, Maki? A hundred might be too hard for you, so- Maki: 91, 92, 93, 94... Kaito: Wha—!? That fast!?
Maki is in fact doing her pushups extremely quickly.
Maki: 100... I'm done.
Maki stands up and brushes the dirt from her hands, totally composed.
Shuichi: Y-You're done already? Kaito: Y-You're not even out of breath... I guess you've trained before, huh? Maki: Aren't you breathing a little too hard? It's not like we really pushed ourselves. Kaito: B-Before coming here, I did some warm ups... I already did 500 push-ups, so...
Neither Shuichi or Maki seem very impressed by this.
Maki: Anyway, I'm done and you can't say I didn't train with you. I'm going back to my room. Kaito: Okay, we're doing training tomorrow, too! You better be there! Maki: ...
Maki heads back to the dorms without acknowledging this.
Video:11:27-53:00 (end). I don't expect anyone to watch all of this.
HIGH LEVEL SUMMARY: An announcement that a body has been discovered plays over the intercom and everyone is asked to gather in "the seance room," which is a candle-lit empty room with a girl's bloody body in the center of it. This is apparently a second murder, which happened while they were investigating the first. After some antics with Monokuma and the Monokubs (animatronic stuffed bears), the students get clarification on the rules of the game - killing is "first come, first served," so if the killer of the two victims (Angie and Tenko) is different, then the culprit they will look for at the "class trial," and the one who will win if they don't find them, is Angie's killer. However, they don't know for sure the two are different so they decide to investigate Tenko's murder regardless.
Kaito freaks out about curses, hugs Maki, gets smacked and leaves, looking kind of sickly; he tells Shuichi it's time to step up. Shuichi investigates the murder while Maki plays assistant.
The gist of the investigation is that Korekiyo, Shuichi, Kokichi and Himiko were performing a seance to summon Angie's spirit. Tenko was meant to be the medium, so she was crouched on the floor, under a heavy cage, which was under a sheet, which had a heavy statue of a dog on top of it. She nevertheless was somehow stabbed in the back of a neck by a sickle during the seance.
They finish the investigation and head out of the room. Just outside, Kokichi is lying on the ground, his head bloody. Is it a third murder?! ...No, he was just playing dead. Hilarious. He did however hit his head for real stepping through a floorboard, though, and appears to be genuinely kind of concussed.
At that point a bell rings and they are instructed to head to the trial grounds.
POINTS OF INTEREST: 18:45-21:32: Deciding to investigate. Kokichi seems excited. Kaito freaks out about curses and hugs Maki. Notably, he calls her Harumaki ("Maki Roll").
24:02-24:48: Investigating the body. Tenko has a stab wound in the back of her neck. Maki tells Shuichi that her death might not have been instant, but she couldn't have gone far before she bled out. Shuichi asks if she knows this from experience. "Of course. Quick deaths are my speciality."
35:02-35:37; Shuichi comments that the statue is 175 pounds, or about the weight of two girls. Maki asks "What do you know about girls? Have you ever touched a woman besides your mother?" After Shuichi reacts, she assures him she was kidding.
36:58-37:37: Tsumugi is crying that she was suspicious of Tenko. Maki tells her, "Cry later. Crying won't bring Tenko back... and if we don't investigate thoroughly, we'll die too."
48:54-50:24: Maki and Shuichi find Kokichi with his head bloodied on the floor in the hallway. He apparently hit his head pretty hard... Maki tells him, "If you're going to lose consciousness, do it after you tell us everything."
This memory watches Maki alone. From the glimpses you can get out the school windows as she moves around, it's the middle of the night.
Her first stop is her lab, where she opens one of the cases in the foreground and assembles the pieces inside into a crossbow.
From there she goes up some stairs, through a hallway that looks like it belongs in a haunted house, up another flight of stairs to a hall full of pillars and vaulted ceilings that would look like a church if not for the giant Monokuma statues (is this really a school?) and into another lab. On the left of this one appears to be a bunch of case files. Maki goes to the shelf on the right, which contains a variety of bottles that appear to be poisons. She retrieves a bottle labeled "STRIKE-9 POISON" and heads back out.
Summary: Sixteen students are gathered in an open underground space that looks like it might have been part of a factory at one point. There is a large, round passageway with a sign pointing to it that helpfully says "Exit." They comment that this is surprisingly considerate of someone, and possibly dangerous, but they decide to head in anyway.
Kaede: No need to worry! It looks a bit dangerous, but we're all Ultimates here! As long as we work together, everything will work out just fine! Shuichi: Y-Yeah... You're right. Kaito: That's exactly what I was gonna say! We're really on the same wavelength, Kaede! Gimme a hug! Kaede: Um...no.
They head into the tunnel, which contains an incredibly frustrating side-scroller minigame, where all sixteen students "die" before they make it past the first screen of obstacles. That is, they are knocked out by various traps and wake up sore and back where they started.
They sit around on the ground exhausted and shocked for a moment. Shortly, Monokuma and the Monokubs show up. Kaito yells a bit about how Monokuma finally figured out what they were doing, but Monokuma just tells them he knew what they were up to the whole time.
Maki: If you knew all along, then this was just a trap. Tenko: Then there *was* no exit! You tricked us! Monophanie: ...No, there's an exit. Monotaro: I think you guys'll manage to reach it if you all work together! Monophanie: Yeah! There's nothing you 16 Ultimates can't accomplish if you work together! Monokuma: Puhuhu. And if first you don't succeed... ...try, try again. Try as many times as you want until you accept reality! Ah-hahahaha!
The stuffed bears exit. The students discuss how this was all a ploy to kill their spirits by leaving that small bit of hope and then crushing it.
Kaede: Yeah, but we can't just give up... Right, you guys? I mean, we've only failed once, y'know. We can't give up this early, right? Himiko: But... isn't getting out of here impossible? Kaede: No, it's not. It may take one more try or a lot more tries, but it's not impossible. Forget about Monokuma. It doesn't matter what he says to us. I don't wanna lose to him! And I don't want any of you to lose, either! I refuse to lose to someone who would do these terrible things to us!
Everyone is pretty touched. Kaede offers that once they make it out of this place, they should all stay friends. Everyone agrees.
Kaito: Anyway, it doesn't matter if Monokuma says it's impossible! We'll show him what we can do! Kaede: Yeah, you're right! Kokichi: Yeah, let's work together! We messed up last time, but I'm sure it will go well this time!
They attempt the corridor again. It does not go much better this time. They wake up in pain at the entrance again.
Miu: W-What the... And I was looking forward to a happy ending... Kokichi: Not yet! We're just getting started!
They try again. And again. And again. And again.
Gonta: Failed... again. Kaito: Damn it...! Tsumugi: I can't... go on... Kaede: Wait, we can't give up. This time, we'll-- Kokichi: ...Knock it off already. Kaede: Huh? Kokichi: You're free to keep trying on your own, but forcing us to join you is basically torture. Kaede: T-Torture? Kokichi: You know what really hurts? Being denied the right to give up in an impossible situation... You won't let us give up and no matter what we say, you have the moral high ground... That... doesn't sound like torture to you? When you say we can't give up, you're not inspiring us—you're strong-arming us! Kaede: I-I didn't mean it like that... Tenko: H-Hey, degenerate! Quit being so selfish! Kokichi: I-I'm not being selfish... The others feel the same way, too... Kaede: What? E-Everyone...?
Most people look worn out and avoids eye contact as they agree it makes most sense to give up.
Maki: I knew this was impossible from the start.
A couple people don't agree.
Gonta: P-Please, wait! We... no can give up! Kaito: You guys! Are you really okay with not getting out of this place?! Kokichi: We shouldn't have to push ourselves... Let's just find another way out, okay? Kaede: What?! Rantaro: ...You're talking about the killing game, aren't you? Kokichi: Oh, so you're gonna interpret it like that, huh? Tenko: Wh-What are you saying?! There's no way we can do the killing game! Kokichi: Nee-heehee... Calm down. Want some bubble gum? You can blow pretty big bubbles with it.
They devolve into squabbling, and Ryoma comments they fell apart pretty quick for people trying to work together.
Kaede: I'm sorry... this is my fault. I'm so sorry... Shuichi: No, Kaede... Kaito: I-Idiot! What're *you* apologizing for?! It's not your fault at all! Maki: ...Really? I think it is Kaede's fault. Kaito: H-Huh?! Why?!
The school bell chimes and the Monokubs announce it is now Night Time. Everyone decides to call it a day and rest at the dorms which are apparently there for them. It seems like this is the first night they've been here. Rantaro gives an ominous warning not to let their guards down, and everyone disperses to climb the long ladder back to the surface, though Kaito and Shuichi linger to talk to Kaede.
Shuichi finds Maki pacing in an overgrown gym. She looks unhappy and lost in thought.
Shuichi: Maki? What's the matter? Maki: ...Just remembering some things. I don't know why I always start doing this when I'm idle for too long. Shuichi: Remembering what?
Maki just stares at him impassively for a while.
Shuichi: ...Sorry, I... I can leave you alo—
Maki interrupts.
Maki: I told you about the friend I killed, right? Shuichi: ...Yeah. The girl who was the daughter of the yakuza leader? Maki: Yes. ...I think about it a lot. Maybe that means I do regret it after all... but I had no choice. I had to kill her. Still... I'm sure she hates me. If it was me... I'd definitely hold a grudge, even after I died. Shuichi: ... Maki: But there's no point in thinking about it now. I just need to forget about it. If I keep lingering on it, it will start to affect my work.
Shuichi breaks in there, strangely decisively.
Shuichi: No. Never forget her. I'm sure that she wants you to remember her too. Maki: ...What? How can you even understand anything I'm going through? Your sympathy is annoying.
Shuichi flinches back.
Shuichi: T-That isn't what I meant. I just mean... I don't think she hates you. Maki: ...Don't say that like you know. Her life was taken away. Of course she does. Shuichi: But she was your friend, Maki. Maki: Yes... Even if it was for work, I killed my friend. Shuichi: But that doesn't mean that she holds a grudge against you. Even if you killed *me*, I don't think I could blame you for that... Isn't that part of being friends? Maki: ...You really are... Maki: ... Maki: No... forget it. I'm heading back to my room.
Maki turns her back to Shuichi, but as she turns away, it looks like she's smiling.
This memory takes place in a trial ground. 15 students are present, though they are no longer at their podiums. It looks like some emotional stuff has been going down. There are also 6 robotic stuffed bears.
Monokuma: And now, the moment you've all been waiting for! Punishment Time! Tenko: P-Punishment...? You mean... Kaede's execution...?! Kaito: N-No friggin' way! There's no way we'll let you do that! Monokubs: Exisals assemble!
The five Monokubs get into their giant robots armed with machine guns and threaten to kill the students if they interfere. Tenko, Kaito and Gonta announce their intent to just... fight the robots. With their fists. They have a lot of spirit.
Kaede: Everyone, stop!!!
Kaede gives an emotional speech, tears running down her cheeks, about how she has prepared herself for this, and this doesn't count as giving up, because Shuichi and the others will still have her wish. She makes them promise to escape and all be friends when they're out. They promise. Well, except for Kokichi, who just says:
Kokichi: Well, Kaede, you definitely weren't boring.
Monokuma: Now then... let's get started. I have a special punishment prepared for the Ultimate Pianist, Kaede Akamatsu!
Maki, Kaito and Shuichi meet in the courtyard at night for training, as usual.
Kaito: Oh, there you are, bro! Maki: ...I was surprised when you mentioned a special kind of training. Kaito: Well!? You brought the thing we need for our new training, right?! Maki: New training? Kaito: Pass it here! Shuichi: Here, but... is it usable?
Shuichi offers a white practice sword.
Maki: ...Is this a practice sword? Why would you have something like this? Kaito: Huh? Why are you making such a disgusted face, Maki Roll? Shuichi, internally, looking horrified: [Ah, that's right! Maki...] Maki: ...So you didn't tell Kaito yet. When I first started working, I botched a mission with a katana. Since then, I decided not to use swords... Kaito: Oh, I see... Maki: Don't make that face. I know you didn't mean any harm by it. Kaito: No, it's my fault for making you remember something that makes you feel bad. Alright! Tell us about it now! I'll listen to all of it! Maki: ...Huh? Kaito: It's difficult to talk to people about your failures. I get it. But didn't I tell you? Being able to share your burdens with others... That's how you get stronger! Don't hold on to your past forever! You gotta confront it to move on! And I'm gonna help you with that! Maki: ...What are you saying? You're ridiculous. Anyway, that failure doesn't bother me anymore. But I don't mind talking about it. Just be warned, it's a boring story. Shuichi: [Before, she would have just told me to mind my own business. Maki has changed a lot since then...]
Maki: ...When planning an assassination, you need to gather detailed information first. You need to know the target—their schedule, movements, friends and acquaintances... For this particular target, he normally worked late into the night... But when I looked further into his schedule, I found out he was into some nerdy hobbies. Kaito: Nerdy hobbies? You mean like Tsumugi is? Maki: Yeah, just like her. He especially liked cosplay. Shuichi: Cosplay? [Never in a million years would I imagine hearing "cosplay" from Maki's mouth.] Maki: So while I observed my target's private life... I thought of a good plan to get close to him, while concealing my weapon. Kaito: How? Maki: ...A prop carrying case. Kaito: What's that? How's it different from a normal carrying case? Maki: Tsumugi would know. It's a specially-made carrying case for cosplay props. It can accomodate large props, so it's convenient to carry around...So I placed a katana into that carrying case and made my move. But then... the people around thought I was a cosplayer, and something odd happened. Shuichi: What happened? Maki: On that day, they were holding a cosplay event in the same hall the target had gone to. Unfortunately... I had the same height and hairstyle as a popular character, who also carried a katana. They thought I was cosplaying that character... so I got dragged into a hall by a group of excited people with expensive cameras.
Maki: They almost saw the weapons I had in my case... If they had, they would have found out my katana was actually real... Shuichi: Sounds like a close call... Kaito: Hahaha! I was wondering what this "serious failure" of yours was going to be! Shuichi: Yeah, honestly... it was much cuter than i was expecting. Maki: Don't laugh... For me, it was very serious... I was branded as a failure, because of something so stupid. If they didn't donate to the orphanage anymore... then it would've... been the end... Shuichi: Ah... you're right... Kaito: Yeah, you're right... that's not funny. I'm really sorry for laughing... Shuichi: Yes, me too... Sorry for laughing, Maki. Maki: ... Y-You don't need to apologize. I'm not mad.
Shuichi: [Maki turned her head to the side with a pout. That expression on her face... Opening up to us with her stories... I could never have imagined this. My impression of her has changed yet again. There's still so much I don't know about Maki and Kaito... I hope Maki is right. We can learn more about each other after we get out... No. We will become friends! We will defniitely get out of here!]
They do actually train with the sword a bit before returning to the dorm.
Five students - Maki, Shuichi (detective boy), Tsumugi (plain girl), Himiko (witch girl), and Keebo (a robot) - are standing at podiums at a trial. The other 11 podiums have portraits that have been crossed out in red, except for ones which are clearly C and X of AlcheME, which are marked with purple question marks. A stuffed bear presides.
Tsumugi: It's like Maki said, though... Kaito's gotta be the victim. Cuz if Kokichi, the mastermind, was dead, the killing game would be over. Himiko: Yeah, that's true. Maki: Monokuma, hurry up and bring Kokichi here. We already know who the victim is. Monokuma: Huh? Already? You sure it's not too soon? Keebo: We need the suspect present now that he's the subject of our discussion Monokuma: Gotcha. I guess I'll bring him out now. Hey Mister Suspect! That's your cue!
A big metal door slides open, and out steps... a large and heavily armed mech, with EXISAL written on the hatch. It hops over to the circle of podiums, to stand behind... the one with Kaito (X)'s portrait.
Shuichi: An Exisal!? Himiko: Wh-What!? Why is an Exisal here!?
From the Exisal comes... Kaito's voice.
Exisal Kaito: Haha, whoops! My bad. Seems like I gave you guys a scare, huh? Keebo: Is that... Kaito's voice!? Maki: ...Kaito? Exisal Kaito: There was a lot going on, so I just hid in an Exisal and kinda dozed off. Haha, and that's why I'm so late! Anyway, what's goin' on, guys? Tsumugi: H-Hold on. Then the one what died wasn't Kaito—
The Exisal interrupts... in Kokichi (C)'s voice.
Exisal Kokichi: Stuuupid! That was just a lie!
The Exisal hops over behind Kokichi's portrait.
Exisal Kokichi: Ah-haha, you guys thought I died!? I would never! Noooo way! Keebo: K-Kokichi!? Exisal Kokichi: "I'm gonna live till I die! I'm gonna laugh 'stead of cry!" Himiko: Wow, that's old! How old are you!? Maki: I thought as much... Your appearance right now is fit for a lowly asshole like you. Exisal Kokichi: Nee-heehee... You're making me blush! You're getting so angry over me. Shuichi: ... Is that really you, Kokichi!? Exisal Kokichi: That's right, Cracker Jack! Himiko: Seriously, how old are you!? Shuichi: Then why are you hiding in there? Show yourself! Exisal Kokichi: Oh, this is more for self-defense. Little Miss Crankypants would kill me if I showed myself.
He is clearly referring to Maki, who is in fact giving the Exisal a death glare.
Exisal Kokichi: I understand how you guys must feel. You can't believe it because I'm like this, right? Nee-heehee... That's what I thought. In that case, I brought evidence!
Youtube. (She just describes it in that video; the memory is the actual event.)
Late in the night, Maki takes a crossbow, poison arrows, and an Electrohammer, approaches a circle of 4 heavily armed Exisal mechs, hits one with the hammer to disable it, and climbs into the cockpit to hijack it. While inside the mech, she can enter a hangar which has a security system on the shutter door.
Inside, she finds C and X in the middle of a fight. C has a crossbow arrow in this arm. They're interrupted by the entrance of the Exisal and turn to stare.
C tries to use his remote to control the Exisal, and Maki immediately jumps out of the robot and shoots him in the back. The arrow is coated with a non-immediately lethal poison, so it causes a lot of pain and will kill him, but Maki wants to question him first. She demands to know what he's actually planning, as a Remnant of Despair. If he's really the mastermind, why was he so obvious about it? What is he trying to accomplish?
C: Wh-What are you talking about...? Remnants of Despair? What's that? I-I don't understand... anything you're saying... B-But anyway... why are you... starting up the k-killing game... when it should've ended? Y-You already know... it's all meaningless... and th-that I'm the mastermind... Do you... love killing that much?
Maki: Shut up, you asshole!
Maki gives up on questioning and tries to shoot him again. However...
X jumps in the way of the arrow.
Maki immediately freaks out and runs from the hangar, leaving both C and X there inflicted with poison as she crosses the entire school to go back to the Ultimate Detective's lab (which is stocked with poisons) to find the antidote.
However, when she returns, the shutter to the hangar is closed and she can't get in again. Instead, she goes to a small bathroom window and calls out to X before throwing the antidote inside. But C steals it.
C: Sorry, but I can't die here... Since I'm... the mastermind of this killing game... Maki: Wait! There's only one antido-- C: Oh... you don't have to worry about [X]. He fulfilled his dream, right? He already went... to space. X: Tch... Dammit.
C "drinks" the antidote.
C: Phew! I feel so much better! I guess that's a wrap... Or maybe not. Because now another class trial is going to start. Maki: Class trial...? C: You'll be the blackened for this case, y'know? The blackened who killed [X]. Maki: I... I killed...? X: Shut it! Screw the class trials! Like hell I'm going to let you have your way! Maki: [X], why did you protect [C]?! If you didn't help him, then-- X: I couldn't help it... Even if it's [C]... I-I can't... have you kill anybody! Maki: ...What? C: Awww, [X] wasn't protecting me. He was protecting Maki! ...The situation just got way worse, huh? Maki is gonna become the blackened responsible for killing you... all because you protected me. Maki: ... X: D-Don't you worry, Maki Roll, I'm not gonna die that easily... Just leave it to me! I'll put an end to this killing game! C: Ah-haha... You're still full of energy, even like that... You really are... not boring. X: What? C: Nee-heehee... I wanna see what a dying [X] can do. So show me what you've got! I won't meddle with your plans! Maki: What are you--?! X: Don't mind me... Run, Maki Roll! Just... hurry up and run... Run... and live! You gotta live!
Maki does run, but not away. She goes back around to frantically attack the control panel for the hangar door with her knife in an attempt to open it. It doesn't work.
When she goes back around to the window again, no one is there. The bathroom door is closed, and no one answers. Despite her distress, there's nothing else Maki can do there, and she just has to leave. As she does, she decides her new plan - during the class trial, she'll make everyone believe C is the real culprit. By voting wrong, everyone but her will die-- but that includes C. And she thinks everyone else's lives are a fine exchange.

Memory 19 - student council / transfer student from beyond the grave
Eleven students are gathered in a gym. They're standing in three distinct groups—Maki is off by herself, there are three girls and a robot gathered behind another girl (Angie), and then the remaining students (which includes Kokichi/C, Kaito/X, and Korekiyo/Medusa) are grouped together. They were talking about something else, but Kokichi breaks in to comment on Maki's presence.
Kokichi: Hey guys, am I sleepwalking or something? What's she doing here? Maki: ... Kokichi: Oh, I see! I'm hallucinating! After what Maki said before, there's no way she'd be here! Kaito: Don't say something so stupid. You'll never get to know her better if you never talk to her! Kokichi: Maybe everyone would prefer that! Maybe everyone would prefer that this dangerous killer stays far away from us! Of course, I wouldn't prefer that at all! Kaito: You better cut it out! Angie: He's right. Murder and death have no place in a peaceful academy life.
Angie's group agrees with her. This is interrupted by Gonta coming in, commenting in alarm that he'd noticed something in the courtyard. Gonta is then interrupted in turn by the arrival of three Monokubs (sentai-colored robot bear cubs), who have apparently gathered them there to present a new motive.
The motive is a transfer student—a transfer student from beyond the grave. They have the opportunity to perform a ritual written in the Necronomicon and resurrect one of the four students who have died so far. After some antics, the Monokubs disappear and leave them with that. The students discuss, and the consensus is that resurrecting the dead isn't possible. Maki thinks the whole thing is stupid and she shouldn't have come after all.
However, Angie suggests that there's an alternative explanation—it could be that the four students who died aren't actually dead. Shuichi objects that they inspected the bodies themselves, so that's impossible—but Keebo says that Monokuma had pointed out the Exisals as proof of very advanced technology, so they could have been very convincing fakes. Most of the students still don't buy this, but Angie's group agrees with her immediately again.
Gonta jumps in to mention what he saw in the courtyard - some letters that he'd found written there before have had more added to them. If none of them did it, it could be a message from the dead—or, from still-alive students somewhere in the school.
Angie then takes the Necronomicon and says that she'll make the decision of whether to perform the ritual or not—or rather, her god (Atua) will. She also hugs Gonta and tells him he's a good boy and Atua is watching over him. At this point it becomes apparent that Angie is recruiting people to her cult—and they confirm this, calling themselves the "student council," with Angie as their president. Korekiyo points out this makes sense since they're in precisely the right sort of situation for a cult to form. Maki asks if they're serious, since the ritual is clearly a trap, but Angie assures them she'll handle it. Kaito is remarkably quiet for all of this, apparently not feeling well.
In the end they don't manage to talk Angie down and the students all part ways.
The next day in the cafeteria, things have escalated. The student council has apparently blocked off their only potential escape route so no one tries to use it—the reasoning being that none of them need to worry about the outside world any more, since wanting to leave only causes people to murder. Everyone is understandably angry about Angie making this decision without asking anyone.
This prompts Angie to decide that the others are clearly still thinking of escaping—she points out that Miu, Shuichi, and Maki all didn't get back to the dorm until late last night—and she makes a rule that no one but the student council is allowed outside of the dorms at night. Everyone isn't very pleased with this either.
Then the Monokubs show up again. This time they've brought a Flashback Light, supposedly with a new memory for them to regain. Angie takes the Flashback Light and... throws it to the ground and stomps on it, breaking it. Her explanation is that the Flashback Lights only restore memories of the outside world, so they don't need them anymore, since they're going to continue living peacefully in the Academy forever and the outside world isn't relevant. The Monokubs retreat. Everyone is furious at Angie again. Kaito says she's gone too far.
Angie: Sorry, but you should take that up with Atua. Kokichi: Geez, I don't think you're sorry at all. So, do you have a plan for the "you-know-what"? Angie: You mean the resurrection ritual? Oh, we have a plan for that!
Angie explains her plan—they will revive someone as a precaution.
Angie: Ummm... What if we get another time limit motive, like the one that got Rantaro killed? ...Shouldn't we have a sacrifice prepared, just in case? Shuichi: You mean... if someone has to die, we should volunteer someone we resurrected? Maki: You're going to resurrect someone... just to kill them all over again? Korekiyo: Kehehe... You have some cruel plans for someone who wants to stop the killing game. Angie: Life cannot always be fun and smiles... Atua must make difficult, even cruel, decisions. But, but! We must submit to Atua's will if we're to live a peaceful school life.
Her cult agrees with her again, except for Tenko, who is quiet this time.
Kokichi: By the way, who are you going to resurrect? Kaito: W-What kind of question is that?! Angie: Hmm... After discussing the matter with Atua, the transfer student we will revive is... Rantaro Amami!
Angie explains that they can't revive convicted murderers like Kaede or Kirumi, or criminals like Ryoma who broke their rules. Meanwhile, Rantaro could be useful. Shuichi reflects to himself that Rantaro had seemed to know things the rest of them didn't. Angie says it's time to leave and the student council goes with her.
Maki: She acts like she's carrying out Atua's will, but this is her will, isn't it? Korekiyo: Even so, we cannot defy her right now. Extreme faith is frightening, indeed. Kokichi: Then, it's an all-out war against the student council! Six versus six! We can win this! Also, we have the assassin on our side! Let's have her kill them nice and quick! Shuichi: Ah, no... We have to resolve this peacefully. Kokichi: Sure, that'd be great, but I don't hear anyone coming up with a plan to end this peacefully.
They then note again that Kaito is totally zoned out and doesn't seem well. He mentions feeling chills and eventually goes back to his room. Maki asks if he's getting sick. Kokichi suggests he could be possessed, and says he's starting to worry about him!! Either way, that's the end of the conversation, and they all leave.
Six students are standing at podiums in a circle. Presiding is Monokuma and the full set of five Monokubs.
Shuichi: I wish to retry a past case. Mokokubs: A retrial?! Tsumugi: Which case? Shuichi: The first one—the murder of Rantaro Amami. I've found new evidence relevant to the case. In light of that evidence, I demand a retrial! Monokuma: What's the point of a retrial? The result of the first class trial has already been settled. Monokubs: Yeah, yeah! Shuichi: What if our vote... was wrong? Himiko: Nyeh? Wrong?! Maki: Monokuma said the blackened for that incident was Kaede... Keebo: Are you saying he was wrong?!
The Monokubs react in shock. Monokuma is silent.
Shuichi: To test the validity of our vote, we're going to retry the entire case. If Monokuma was wrong... the validity of these trials would be in question. The entire killing game wouldn't make sense anymore! Monokuma: I see... You think you can destroy the game by calling out my failure as the gamemaster. Shuichi: You shouldn't have a problem with this if you have nothing to hide, Monokuma. Monokuma: Puhuhu... So in the end, the first case has become the focal point yet again... What a twist! What an interesting twist! Okay, let's do this! Maki: So what is this new evidence? Shuichi: There are several... but before we go any further, I want to discuss Rantaro's talent. Keebo: Did you learn what his talent was? Shuichi: He... was the Ultimate Survivor. Maki: Ultimate... Survivor? Himiko: I saw it, too. He said so in his video.
Rantaro (video): Well, the truth is... this isn't your first killing game. You're the Ultimate Survivor. You survived the last killing game. That's why you get this perk—the Survivor Perk.
Shuichi: Rantaro became the Ultimate Survivor after surviving a past killing game. After his memory was wiped... he participated in the killing game once again. Tsumugi: So this wasn't Rantaro's first killing game? Keebo: But why did he participate in a second killing game?! Shuichi: I'm not sure yet... But after I learned Rantaro was the Ultimate Survivor, I deduced his objective.
Shuichi explains that when Rantaro was killed, he was investigating a hidden door. Unlike Shuichi, who noticed the door by chance, Rantaro had a map of the entire academy as part of his Survivor Perk. He also had left himself a "clue to end the killing game"—that if he needed to find the mastermind, the best chance would be when they went to the hidden room to produce a spare Monokuma. Himiko points out it's ironic that the Ultimate Survivor died, and Shuichi points out that Rantaro didn't have anyone to rely on—and the message he left for himself didn't help either, telling him to only share the information with people he trusted.
Maki: He didn't have any recollection of filming this message, right? That means he must've had trouble believing it as well. Shuichi: It was probably confusing to him, too. That's why he didn't consult us.
They flash back on some cryptic things Rantaro said in chapter 1.
Shuichi: He didn't know if he could trust that video, or trust us, or even trust himself... He must have been... so lost... But with the time limit approaching, he decided to take a chance. Keebo: So he went to the library alone, without telling anyone... Himiko: And he got killed by Kaede's trap.
The Monokubs chatter a bit.
Monokuma: So what's your point? You know who Rantaro was and why he did what he did... But it's pointless now, isn't it? Shuichi: No, there is a point. Now that we know this new information, if we look back at Rantaro's case... we can find a new truth that we missed at the time. Maki: Then let's do it.
It's a trial. Thirteen people are still alive for this one.
Kokichi: Maybe someone snuck into the gym while Kirumi and I were busy talking. Korekiyo: The only ones capable of that are the other three with no alibis. Tenko: Miu, Kaito, and Maki! Miu: Gahhhhh! You're including me, too?! Kokichi: But there's actually one person we can rule out of the suspects list. Kaito (grinning): Right? There's one person who's totally not suspicious! Say who it is already! Shuichi: Kokichi, you're talking about... Miu, right? Kaito: Whaaa—?! Miu?! Kokichi: Yeah, you can take her off the list. She actually has an alibi. Miu: Booya! Suck it, nerds! Kaito: Wait a sec! Since when does she have an alibi?! Shuichi: If you compare everyone's statements, there's no other possibility.
Shuichi remembers Kokichi telling him he saw a half-naked girl wandering around in her underwear for a while, though it was too dark to see who it was.
Maki: ...A girl walking around half-naked? Kokichi: Who else could it be but the horny exhibitionist, Miu? Kaito: W-We can't just jump to conclusions like that... he just saw a shadow, right? That could've been anyone walking around in women's underwear! Even me! Tsumugi: That'd be a whole different issue... Shuichi: No, it's Miu. Without a doubt... Miu and Gonta's statements prove it.
This is an amorphous blob of all the rest of the game except the last few things I want to play with specifically. Here's a very rough bullet point list which I will flesh out parts of if they are relevant or as someone is interested (let me know):
Chapter 2 Motive video, Meeting Ryoma in the night Being questioned Chapter 2 Trial (insect meet & greet alibis, Kirumi's the prime minister) Chapter 2 Execution (Kirumi's escape)
Chapter 3 Second Flashback Light (funeral) Angie's body discovery
Chapter 4 Meteors flashback light Situps training (liking someone after a few days is weird) Talking training (why did you claim to be ultimate child caregiver?) Virtual World Chapter 4 Trial (Ouma fingers Kaito, manipulated Gonta) Chapter 5 Execution (bugs, alter ego Gonta)
Chapter 5 Hope's Peak Flashback Light Ouma and the electrobombs/hammers; Kaito's plan Chapter 5 Trial
Chapter 6 Keebo goes robot, exploring the school Ouma's lab Motherkuma Sorting through Ouma's crayon sketches Rantaro's monopad Rest of Trial - Hope vs. Despair offer - Hope means she and Keebo have to sacrifice themselves, so Shuichi and Himiko go free - Sacrifice actually means being put into the game again

Memory 37: Maki's confession and Kaito's execution
It's the end of a trial. Kaito looks like he's coughed up a lot of blood. Monokuma apparently has control over his armed mechs again, and warns the students against defying him - but Maki is still ready to fight them with a knife. Kaito tries to talk her down, but she refuses to back off.
Maki: I've always fought to kill, but... this is the first time I've fought to protect someone! Kaito: Huh? Maki: And... I've never... been given a name like "Maki Roll" before, either. Kaito: You... Maki: And I've never... met someone as stubborn as you before... And... I've never... fallen for someone before...
Maki starts crying.
Maki: I... don't want this to end... I just... don't... That's why I won't let you kill Kaito! I absolutely won't let you!
Kaito essentially says that he appreciates it, but that his sickness means he's going to die soon anyway - he's struggling to say standing. Also, Maki used to keep herself apart from people because she didn't think she deserved to have friends, but if she's fallen for a guy like him, that means she can learn to love herself. Maki finally lowers her knife and just breaks down into messy crying.
Kaito apologizes to Monokuma for the delay and says he can start the execution. As the Ultimate Astronaut, he's fired into space in a rocket - however, he dies quietly of his illness in space before it comes crashing back down to earth.
Maki, Shuichi, Kaito, Himiko, Tsumugi and Keebo find a door which apparently leads outside. They are very excited! The killing game is finally over! Then they open it, and outside is an apocalyptic, ruined city. They only see it for a minute before they can't breathe and pass out. When they wake up, the door is closed again and Kokichi (C) is there to tell them he's the mastermind, the world is destroyed, and they're the last survivors of humanity because they were launched into space. (C's explanation goes for another 6 minutes into the video but the details are not really important.)
It's a trial. A lot of background bullshit is going on - Tsumugi somehow changes into flawless cosplay of a different Danganronpa character every few seconds, and the walls are full of shifting images of people from the audience, with scrolling commentary from them of the quality you'd expect from a livestream chat.
Shuichi and Himiko are arguing that they're going to sacrifice their lives to end the killing game. Tsumugi says that's suicide! If they all abstain from voting but she doesn't, she'll be the only one who lives. And maybe that's all part of her master plan anyway! Maybe it's all part of her script, like everything else! Like Maki falling for Kaito!
This makes Maki uncertain. A cool meta thing happens where the UI swaps over to have Maki as the protagonist for an argument, where she agrees with Shuichi that they'll use their lives to end Danganronpa. She believes in her feelings. Even if they're fictional people, if they can change reality somehow by ending the killing game, maybe everyone's lives and feelings will have meaning. Tsumugi argues that the game won't end because killing game entertainment is what the world wants. Shuichi says then they'll just have to change the world - and fiction has the power to do that. With their resolve settled, he tells Monokuma to start voting time.
Monokuma refuses and says the game will go on forever. It goes into a cool gameplay sequence where you have to sit through a bunch of minigames without doing anything as they all refuse to continue playing the game.

Memory 40: Epilogue: to the outside world for real
Shuichi, Maki, and Himiko pull themselves out of a pile of rubble in what's left of the school. It's been thoroughly destroyed; all the buildings are demolished, and the sky above them is cracked, confirming that it's a false dome - but beyond it is bright, clear sunlight and not apocalyptic wasteland.
They wonder why they're alive. They definitely planned to sacrifice their lives. In the end they conclude that Keebo must have saved them - and since Keebo is the audience surrogate, maybe that means that the outside world wanted them to live.
They turn to the cracked dome, where they can now exit; they don't really have any other choice but to do so. They wonder what the world out there is like.
Maki: A peaceful world with no fighting or despair. That's what Tsumugi said, right? Shuichi: Yeah. Ah... if she wasn't lying.
Shuichi goes into some speculation - the last thing Tsumugi said was that she was a copycat criminal, which might imply that some of what she previously said was fiction was real, if she "copied" it. So, she might have been lying when she told them that this was all fiction. On the other hand, she might have been lying about the "copying" thing. At the very least, Shuichi can't make himself believe that she was telling the truth when she told them they volunteered for the killing game. (Though she did show them videos, so those would need to be faked too.) Even if they were fans, he just can't believe that they'd want to participate.
Ultimately they conclude there's really no way to know anything for sure. They'll see some things when they go to the outside world... but maybe the world out there is fictional or full of lies too. Shuichi offers that maybe this doesn't even matter, and there's not actually much difference between truth and lies if they can both affect the world in both good and bad ways. All that matters is the result.
So, in the end, they know nothing at all for sure and maybe it doesn't matter. THE END!

Maki: ...
Kaede: Maki... you were in the Game Room when Rantaro was killed, right?
Shuichi: What were you all doing down here? Rantaro was with you, right?
Maki: ...Am I a suspect?
Kaede: Oh, no! That's not what I meant--
Maki: You should suspect me.
It's hard to imagine her as the Ultimate Child Caregiver.)
Shuichi: But... why were you all here in the first place?
Maki: It was Kaito's idea. He suddenly wanted to hold a strategy meeting and gathered us together. He said we should confront Monokuma once the time limit expires. And he picked the seven people he thought would be useful in a fight.
Kaede: (Seven people... Kaito, Gonta, Maki, Tenko, Himiko, Angie, and Rantaro...)
Kaede: But, um... I'm not sure those seven would all be useful in a fight, though.
Maki: Kaito thought Himiko's magic and Angie's connection to Atua would be useful.
Kaede: But what about you, Maki? Why did he also pick the Ultimate Child Caregiver?
Maki: ...He just looked at me and said, "Yeah, you probably know how to fight."
Kaede: (That's it? Geez... That does sound like something Kaito would do, though...)
Shuichi: But why have a strategy meeting in the Game Room in the basement?
Maki: ...Beats me. Maybe Kaito figured it would be harder for Monokuma to find us here.
Kaede: (In other words, it was just a coincidence?)
Shuichi: And what was Rantaro doing at the time? Was he in the strategy meeting with you?
Maki: He was... at first. But he excused himself to go to the bathroom, and left on his own... Kaito and Tenko went looking for him so we could finish the meeting before time expired.
Kaede: (That must have happened around...) [flashback to meeting Kaito and Tenko in the hallway]
Kaede: Then, did the four of you just wait in the Game Room the whole time?

Shuichi: Ah, well, he *did* say he wasn't feeling well—
Maki: Why are you making excuses for him?
I had no choice but to—
Maki: ...

Maki? So this is the Ultimate Child Caregiver's lab. ...You wouldn't think so, judging by the door—
Maki: You're right.
Shuichi gives up and leaves her alone.

Ah, I—
Kaito: Alright!
In order to escape the Ultimate Hunt, I erased my own memory—
Kaito: Wait, did you say Ultimate Hunt?
Hmhm~ ♪
Kaito: S-Stop it!
K1-B0: But I believe cooperating with each other is the most logical course of action—
Kokichi: *snore* I'm snooooring!
Kokichi dashes out of the room.

I'm sure you would make a good "dad."
Maki: Sh-Shut up!

Then this guy grabbed my arm and dragged me all the way here—
Kaito: Well, don't worry about the small stuff!
It's okay, you don't have to—
Maki: ...Fine, I'll do it.
A hundred might be too hard for you, so-
Maki: 91, 92, 93, 94...
Memory 9 - Tenko investigation
POINTS OF INTEREST:
18:45-21:32: Deciding to investigate.
Memory 10 - assassination prep
The memory ends there.
Memory 11 - Death Road of Despair
Summary:
Sixteen students are gathered in an open underground space that looks like it might have been part of a factory at one point.
This time, we'll--
Kokichi: ...Knock it off already.
Memory 12 - Harmonious Heart (kinda)
Memory 13 - Ch. 1 Execution
Kaede gives a few more inspiring words to Shuichi before she is dragged off for a surreal and grisly execution on a giant piano.
Memory 14: Pure white practice sword
Transcript:
Maki...]
Maki: ...So you didn't tell Kaito yet.
[Never in a million years would I imagine hearing "cosplay" from Maki's mouth.]
Maki: So while I observed my target's private life...
Memory 15: Exisal
Transcript:
Keebo: We need the suspect present now that he's the subject of our discussion
Monokuma: Gotcha. I guess I'll bring him out now. Hey Mister Suspect! That's your cue!
A big metal door slides open, and out steps... a large and heavily armed mech, with EXISAL written on the hatch. It hops over to the circle of podiums, to stand behind... the one with Kaito (X)'s portrait.
Shuichi: An Exisal!?
Himiko: Wh-What!? Why is an Exisal here!?
From the Exisal comes... Kaito's voice.
Exisal Kaito: Haha, whoops! My bad. Seems like I gave you guys a scare, huh?
Keebo: Is that... Kaito's voice!?
Maki: ...Kaito?
Exisal Kaito: There was a lot going on, so I just hid in an Exisal and kinda dozed off. Haha, and that's why I'm so late! Anyway, what's goin' on, guys?
Tsumugi: H-Hold on. Then the one what died wasn't Kaito—
The Exisal interrupts... in Kokichi (C)'s voice.
Exisal Kokichi: Stuuupid! That was just a lie!
The Exisal hops over behind Kokichi's portrait.
Exisal Kokichi: Ah-haha, you guys thought I died!? I would never! Noooo way!
Keebo: K-Kokichi!?
Exisal Kokichi: "I'm gonna live till I die! I'm gonna laugh 'stead of cry!"
Himiko: Wow, that's old!
In that case, I brought evidence!
...Sadly, the memory cuts off there.
Memory 16 - Ouma's room
Memory 17 - Failing to kill Ouma
Maki: Wait! There's only one antido--
C: Oh... you don't have to worry about [X].
If you didn't help him, then--
X: I couldn't help it...

Youtube. (20:20-34:10)
Memory 20 - retrial / Ultimate Survivor

Memory 21 - women's underwear

Memory 38: The secret of the outside world
Maki, Shuichi, Kaito, Himiko, Tsumugi and Keebo find a door which apparently leads outside.
Memory 39: We'll use our lives to end Danganronpa
THE END!
